AOS in Action

Rosewood Boat Landing

After the historic flooding in South Carolina in October of 2015 a public boat landing was rendered unusable. Due to the strained resources of the local government, funds to repair the landing usable were not allocated. AOS stepped in and teamed up with Vulcan to reopen the boat landing to the public.

Leadership Columbia 2017 Lincoln Street Tunnel Entrance Enhancements – Watermarked Project.

The Leadership Columbia Class of 2017 has proposed a plan to work with the City of Columbia to revitalize and make pedestrian-friendly the Lincoln Street Tunnel in order to both connect the Vista Greenway and to memorialize Columbia’s unique spirit of unity. The class hopes to achieve this by implementing new landscaping, locally designed artwork, seating areas, and upgraded lighting features. We have chosen to call this effort “Watermarked”, symbolizing the strength, unity, and passion with which the Midlands communities came together after the October 2015 flood.

The Lincoln Street Tunnel is the first segment of the Vista Greenway – it is a 100-year-old railroad tunnel that stretches 400 feet under Lincoln Street, beginning at the corner of Lincoln and Lady Streets. Although short, the new rail-trail has helped begin to transform what was an unpleasant corridor of the city into a critical link for pedestrians and cyclists between residential neighborhoods, Finlay Park, an area used for popular recreational activities, and the Vista, the city’s shopping, and entertainment district.

While the tunnel is currently designated as a walking and biking path, it is not a popular area due to its run-down appearance. Our class hopes to make the tunnel a true connector to the Vista and a place that attracts our citizens, business owners, and tourists to the area.
